What You'll Do:

Land Use Permitting & Expansion
Works with Director of Community and Government Relations, Chief Strategy Officer, General Counsel, President of Vulcan Lands, Division Presidents and VP/GMs to identify markets, determine risks and opportunities with greenfield and expansion plans. Identify teams consisting of internal and external subject matter experts to determine strategy related to community issues, political environment and stakeholder interests and concerns that may impact greenfield and land use permit expansion plans. Develop strategies and negotiation options that can maximize success of a project for Vulcan. Drive awareness of the "greenfield protocol" across all greenfield and expansion projects. Work with Division Leaders and the Land Department to report progress of greenfield and expansion projects. Take a lead role as the face of Vulcan at public meetings, meetings with elected officials and media interactions (in consultation with the Director of Communications).Keep abreast of latest industry developments and competitors within your areas of involvement.


Governmental Relations
Work with Government Relations team to develop VMCPAC strategies that encourage voluntary participation in the Vulcan Materials PAC and strategies for the distribution of VMCPAC funds at the federal, state and local levels that maximize the political benefit to Vulcan. Development of relationships at all levels of government that benefit Vulcan and its operations. Ensure that Vulcan political contributions and expenditures are in keeping with Vulcan policies. Advise Corporate and Division leadership regarding political issues that might impact Vulcan.


Community Relations
Guide the Company-wide and/or Division community relations strategy. Work with CR/GR teams to assist with addressing community complaints and concerns. Work with Plant Managers to help develop community relations plans at the local levels. Become familiar with the issues causing concerns in the community and learn how to address those issues in order to mitigate concerns. Ensure consistency in application of community relations policies and practices. Work to develop Vulcan branded community relations projects. Develop Division Public Relations and Foundation budgets to support the CR efforts. Willingness to work with non-profits which Vulcan supports with contributions.

Media Relations
Serve as a primary contact for all media interactions in the Division and assist Community Relations/Government Relations Team with advice on their media interactions. Work to identify potential crisis situations (creeping crisis) in the communities in which we operate. Work with the Director of Communications to respond when appropriate to media inquiries and serve as the face of Vulcan when necessary. Be prepared to assist others in the development of talking points, establish communications teams or crisis management centers in reaction to events anywhere in the Division. Communicate media, accident, liability and other noteworthy events to Risk, Communications and Division Leadership. Assist in development and training of Division Crisis Management Plans and Media Training.


Leadership / Team Management
Work closely with subordinates to advise and provide direction in all areas that will benefit Vulcan and assist them in developing skills required for their own advancement. Provide feedback on a regular basis including Performance Dialogues on a quarterly basis. Work with HR and others on performance management and compensation recommendations.

Maintain Relationships. Ability to maintain professional relationships when dealing with people of different political interests or opinions, excellent business planning, and people management skills.

Budget. Applied knowledge, skill, and abilities in department budgeting cost control, cost tracking, and program development. Provide direct active and budgetary management of the GA/FL community relations program, including budget development, cost control, developing long-term strategies, team building, and coordination with operations and sales personnel to execute the strategic plan.

Educate. Foster improved knowledge among residents, community leaders, local politicians, and educational professionals regarding the importance and use of minerals and aggregates by society.

Support Operations. Support operations in creating awareness within our local communities that Vulcan's aggregate and related operations are a necessary and beneficial component of the community and our standard of living and is an active focused community partner.

Qualifications

Skills You'll Need:

Education. Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent training and experience in government affairs and/or media relations.

Experience. Minimum of five years of work experience in community and public relations and/or government affairs representing commercial, construction, industrial or mining industries, with knowledge of regulatory rules, procedures, and governmental agencies at local, state, and federal levels and a variety of community groups and organizations. Demonstrated expertise in work plan development and implementation, preparation of statements of procedures, budgeting, cost control and tracking, project team resourcing and management, external communications, and effective advocacy of company objectives. Experience working with stakeholders having differing views and perspectives.

Technology Skills. Excellent business computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint application. Social media experience is a plus.

Communication Skills. Exceptional skills in public speaking, team building, constructive negotiation, conflict resolution, leadership, strong interpersonal skills in working with people of different interests and varying backgrounds and political beliefs to reach acceptable compromises and to establish and maintain Vulcan's positive public image are required.
